Guest Post: The Mad-Fashioned

Note: About a month ago, someone from Dish Network contacted me and asked if I would be interested in featuring a TV show themed drink on Stay at Home Cocktails, and I mentioned Game of Thrones and Mad Men to them. Here is what they sent me. Sounds tasty.

The “Mad-Fashioned”

If you have been living under a rock you may have not heard about this wildly successful show that brings the watchers back to a time in the early 60s. In simple terms, the men are powerful, the women are beautiful, and the drinks flow liberally no matter what the time of day.  Mad Men is a complicated story about an advertising agency on New York's Madison Avenue in 1960. The top ad executive at the Sterling Cooper agency is the handsome Don Draper, who is not only a smooth ad exec, but is also a polished ladies' man. Women were treated as the “weaker sex” and are pretty much treated as sex objects for most of the show. Minorities are conspicuously absent.

This is not a drink for the show’s powerful men, Don Draper or Pete Campbell.  This is a drink for the Betty Draper Francis character, the impossibly smart and beautiful woman who is kept at the home or country club by her powerful husband, lunching with the other women, which was the norm of the time.  The drink leaves a hint of sugar on the lips.  Making the kiss of the drinker sweet exactly the kind of thing a man in this show wants from his woman, sweet lips, tight dresses, and thigh highs.

Take most of the zest and muddle the zest into two tablespoons of sugar.  Juice the lime and add to lime to 1/2 tablespoon of the sugar and lime mixture, add 1/3 cup lemonade, 4 tablespoons organic grape juice and 2 oz vodka.  Add ice and shake vigorously.  Take a chilled glass and use a slice of lime to rub on the lip of the glass and dip the rim of the glass in the sugar mixture.  Strain the drink into the glass and enjoy.
